College

St. Mary’s College, Negombo traces its origins back to 1872, emerging from the initiative of Rev. Monsignor John B. Vistarini, who established an English school within the Mission House of St. Mary’s Church, Grand Street. Initially known as the St. Mary’s English High School, the institution was officially inaugurated in a new building adjacent to the Mission House, an area that remains its present location. The school's establishment year is marked by some discrepancy, noted by the discrepancy between official records from 1872 and the 1871 date on the school plaque. However, it was in June 1872 that the new building was consecrated and opened by His Grace Bishop Hilarion Sillani, with an initial enrollment of 196 boys.

Over its illustrious journey of nearly 150 years, St. Mary’s College has become a pillar of educational excellence in Negombo and its surrounding areas. Known for its commitment to quality education, disciplined environment, and achievements in sports, the college has garnered widespread acclaim. It stands as a testament to its founders’ vision and dedication, continuing to serve the community with integrity and excellence in education, shaping generations of students and contributing significantly to the broader society.
